TOBACCO IN ARGENTINA
Brief contextualisation of the importance of Tobacco in Argentina
JUJUY
The largest producing region of Argentina (% of total output)rgentina began growing tobacco in the XIX century. Jujuy is the largest tobacco producing region accounting for 36% of the national tobacco production in 2017. It is followed by Salta (30%), Misiones (26%), Tucumán (5%), Corrientes (1.1%), Catamarca (0.7%) and Chaco (0.6%). Production is distributed by 18,931 farms according to data from the Ministry of Agro-industry (2016). Argentina is the 3rd largest tobacco producer in America, and 2nd in South-America. The tobacco sector represents over US$ 3.6 Billion in revenue to the government (excise, VAT and import duties), a staggering number that could be further increased if illicit trade was erased (tax lost due to illicit trade is thought to be worth close to US$ 400 million). The country exported US$ 320 million in tobacco related exports in 2017, representing 0.55% of the total commodity exports of the country.
