obacco growing in the Dominican Republic can be dated as far back as 1492. Tobacco is grown in several regions across the country such as Monte Crisit, Valverde, Puerto-Plata, Espaillat, Santiago Rodríguez, Santiago, La Veja, Sánchez Ramirez, Monseñor Nouel Azua and Monte Plata. Tobacco is grown in almost 5,000 farms. In 2015, tobacco generated close to US$ 100 million in tax revenue for the Government, even though the country has an illicit trade percentage of 51% (according to the latest figures). The country exported US$ 720 million of manufactured tobacco products in 2017. Tobacco related exports represent around 10% of the total commodity exports, making the tobacco industry an important economic activity in the country.
