M

ozambique is the third largest tobacco producer in Africa, behind Malawi and Zimbabwe. Tobacco production has been important to the country since the time of colonization. In recent years the production increased from around 60,000 tons in 2009 to around 90,000. The creation of a processing factory in the nation is known to have contributed to higher levels of production of Mozambican tobacco. The crop is grown mostly on smallholder farms, which is common in the region. The main producing regions are Tete and Niassa which represent over 89% of the domestic tobacco production. In 2016, over US$ 253 million dollars worth of tobacco products were sold domestically.
