TOBACCO IN TANZANIA
Brief contextualisation of the importance of Tobacco in Tanzania
WOMEN IN TOBACCO
Estimated % of women employed on farms (% of total output)obacco production in Tanzania has been decreasing for the past years, after rising incredibly in the end of the 20th century and beginning of the millennia. A large portion of the tobacco exported by the continent passes through the port in Dar-es-Salaam. As such, Tanzania plays a very important role in the African tobacco industry. Even with falling tobacco domestic production, the crop continues to have a significant economic impact in the coastal country. Tobacco is grown in the rural regions of the country and remains as one of the main agricultural export crops generating foreign exchange revenue for the nation. Domestic sales of tobacco products generate sale revenue of US$ 350 million, contributing US$ 100 million to Government coffers.
