obacco cultivation in the United States of America began in 1600.  It is mostly grown in the Southern regions of the country. North Carolina (NC) is the biggest tobacco producing state, accounting for 46% of the national tobacco production. NC is followed by Kentucky (26%), Virginia (9%), Tennessee (7%), Georgia (4%), South Carolina (4%) and Pennsylvania (3%). Leaf production is spread throughout a total of 4,268 farms as per 2015. The US tobacco sector contributes with over US$ 32.4 Billion in revenue to the Government (excise tax and state tax). Tobacco related exports represented over US$ 2 billion, which amounted to 0,14% of the total commodity exports in 2017.
