TOBACCO IN ZIMBABWE
Brief contextualisation of the importance of Tobacco in Zimbabwe
TOBACCO
% of Tobacco sold through contract system (% of total)obacco is one of Zimbabwe’s most important productions. The crop has been grown in the country since the British ruled over the land, and since then Zimbabwe has occupied the role of one of the leading exporters. For several years now, the country has been facing monetary difficulties, shortage of foreign currency and episodes of hyperinflation. The inherent value that tobacco has in the global market allows the easy exportation of the production, thus generating valuable foreign currency that the country’s federal bank balance sheet so urgently needs. The crop is referred to by important policy and economic decision-makers as one of the key drivers to stabilize the monetary situation of the country. The significance of tobacco cannot then be overstated. The country is one of the main Flue-Cured Virginia exporters of this tobacco variety worldwide, only behind Brazil.
