Top producing region (% of total output)

Tobacco growing in Colombia can be dated as far back as 1776. The most important tobacco producing regions in Colombia are: Santander (36%), Huila (19%), Sucre (17%), Bolivar (9%), Boyaca (10%) and Norte de Santander (10%). The sector contributes with close to US$ 200 Million to Government revenue (excise tax), and if the illicit trade would be controlled, the numbers would grow a further US$ 114 Million. Exports related with tobacco represent a total of US$ 45 million, which amounted to 0.11% of the total commodity exports of the country in 2017.
