Tobacco is grown due to being an economically viable production for the country. It provides various employment opportunities. The Government receives significant revenue from taxes on tobacco, the sale of tobacco products and by taxing tobacco companies. Such contributions have reached US$ 444 million in 2018. The industry is a reliable source of foreign currency. Other indirect benefit of tobacco growing is preventing migration within the country as it provides job opportunities in regions where jobs are scarce. The relative stability of the industry provides a stable source of income to many families. Tobacco is also grown to meet the demands of the domestic market and to export.
