Brief contextualisation of the importance of Tobacco in Greece
TOBACCO
Greece is the 3rd largest tobacco producing country in Europe and one of the most important producers of oriental tobacco, growing varieties such as Basma and Katerini, which account for 89% of the total Greek tobacco leaf output. Government revenue (from excise tax and value added tax on tobacco) amounted to close to US$ 3.5 billion, however, the value could be further increased if the illicit trade (18.8%) were to be eliminated. This measure would add another US$ 600 million to the country’s coffers.
