TOBACCO IN DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
Brief contextualisation of the importance of Tobacco in Dominican Republic.
Tobacco
Tobacco growing in the Dominican Republic can be dated as far back as 1492. Tobacco is grown in several regions across the country such as Monte Crisit, Valverde, Puerto-Plata, Espaillat, Santiago Rodríguez, Santiago, La Veja, Sánchez Ramirez, Monseñor Nouel Azua and Monte Plata. Tobacco is grown in almost 5,000 farms. In 2015, tobacco generated close to US$ 100 million in tax revenue for the Government, even though the country has an illicit trade percentage of 51% (according to the latest figures). The country exported US$ 720 million of manufactured tobacco products in 2017. Tobacco related exports represent around 10% of the total commodity exports, making the tobacco industry an important economic activity in the country.
