TOBACCO IN BRAZIL
Brief contextualisation of the importance of Tobacco in Brazil.
South Brazil
The Southern region accounts for 97% of the Tobacco production in Brazil, followed by the Northeast region that produces 2,9%. Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Paraná, all in the Southern region of Brazil, are the three most relevant tobacco producing states. In these states, tobacco is one of the main economic drivers. Brazil is the world’s leading exporter of tobacco. The sector contributes with over US$ 3 Billion to government revenue, and if the illicit trade (54%) would be controlled, the numbers would grow a further US$ 3 Billion. Tobacco is farmed in over 123 thousand farms in 566 counties spread across Brazil. All tobacco related exports surpassed US$ 2 billion, accounting for around 1% of the total commodity exports of the country in 2017.
