TOBACCO IN BANGLADESH

Brief contextualisation of the importance of Tobacco in Bangladesh.

Region Tobacco Production (% of total output)

Tobacco leaf production in Bangladesh is mostly due to the the crop providing a direct cash infusion and the existence of a structured tobacco market. Tobacco production has doubled since the early 21st century and has been relatively stable since then. Other factor that contributed to the production increase of this crop is the availability of loans. Tobacco companies filled financial gaps by providing loans directly to farmers, saving farmers the need to apply for bank loans. No other crop has organized marketing facilities and the lack of cold storage also creates difficulties for the marketing process of food crops, while growers stand to lose their full crop in case of not finding a buyer of the produce in appropriate time before having their production rotting. Growing tobacco eliminates the uncertainty regarding the sale of the production.
