(% of total tobacco leaf output)

Tobacco growing in Thailand continues to occupy an important role in the country’s economy. Domestic consumption of tobacco products has a very relevant economic impact, while revenue from tobacco products sales generated close to US$ 5 billion in revenue (2016). Tax collected by the Government amounted to US$ 2 billion, providing a significant share of the Government’s revenue. As there is domestic demand for the crop, tobacco is grown across the country. A large share of tobacco products consumed are produced in Thailand, ensuring employment opportunities and the possibility for the income of the industry to trickle down into the common citizen’s pocket. The regulations that will be introduced in the future are sure to pose a challenge to the industry and the farmers alike.
