TOBACCO IN TURKEY
Brief contextualisation of the importance of Tobacco in Turkey.
Oriental
Tobacco History in Turkey goes all the way back to the early 17th century as a result of trade with foreign merchants. The country is known for the birth of cigarettes, when, in the 19th century, soldiers, who used tobacco to boost morale, wrapped the leaves in the paper tubes they were using for gunpowder. Tobacco production has an important role in the country’s economy, specially in the Aegean region of Turkey. One of the varieties of tobacco called Oriental is also referred to as Turkish, due to the country being the largest producer of this type of tobacco. The Turkish Government received over US$ 11 billion in revenue from the tobacco industry, through excise duty and sales tax. Tobacco remains one of the major income streams for the national treasury.
