TOBACCO GENERAL EXPORTS

Tobacco related exports (% of total exports)

Tobacco leaf production in Bulgaria began in 1550. The country mainly produces Oriental tobacco. Basmi represents 59% of the total domestic leaf production.  Bulgaria is the 5th largest European producer of tobacco. Tobacco related exports generated over US$ 300 million for the Bulgarian economy. According to the National Customs Agency, cigarette taxes contributed with over US$ 1.3 billion in revenue for the government coffers.  This could be further increased, if the 6.8% that is estimated to be the size of the illicit cigarette trade was erased, thus adding a further US$ 111 million to state coffers.
