Macedonia is an important producer of Oriental tobacco, a variety characterized for its richer aroma compared with other types of tobacco. The domestic tobacco production comes from a total of 28 500 farms spread across the nation. The production value of tobacco related products, like cigarettes, cigars and cigarillos amounts to a value of over US$ 429 million. Tobacco represents 3.2% of the North Macedonia’s GDP and it still is the crop that can produce the highest monetary value per hectare and is regarded as a strategic crop. Tobacco industry comprises 4% of the total industry of the country.
